Tongue in cheek

I thought the below headline on The Times of India website was quite funny and precisely 'tongue in cheek'.

Last 3 months....

First of all, apologies to all my regular blog readers, for my disappearance from the blogosphere in the last 3 months or so. I was kept busy between switching jobs, and a much needed holiday back home - India. I shall try my best in future to not make you all wait for so long! (Assuming, you wait for my posts ;o ).

My travels took me to Delhi and Jodhpur, with my friends and family in Dubai missing me for almost close to a month!. It was after 3 years that I stayed in Delhi for more than a week continuously, and honestly had a great time catching up with a lot of friends and family (Cant believe, I still managed to not meet a lot of them!!! Apologies...).

This trip turned out to be quite special, for the sheer reason, that I could meet few friends whom I had not met for as long as 6 years! Obviously, meeting with cousins and family as well made it really special, all the more as it was around the festival of Diwali. In my itinerary, I really wanted to add Bombay, as few very special people of my life live there..... regretfully, I just could not make it.

Other than meeting up with friends and family, one thing what I did the most was clicking photographs. Be it Jodhpur, or while travelling within Delhi, the Olympus was always with me. Many of my closest friends would agree when I say, that I have been passionate about photography since a very long time now, going back as much as 8-9 years. My grad college buddies used to tag me as 'the official photographer of the group', a title I was and will always be proud of! So, this time around, I took a further step, and actually went out just to click pictures, and trust me, going out and clicking just about anything is a different high altogether. It surely enhanced my skills too..... I am attaching few of the pictures here to this post, and would love it if you guys could leave your comments about them on the blog. If you do like them, please check many more on my photography page on Facebook - 'Shoot at Sight Photography' (Don't forget to 'like' the page)....

So this was all about the last 3 months..... There were a lot many issues/events which happened in the last 3 months, and I honestly regret not writing about them (like the 2G scam, Adarsh society, etc), but I am sure there would be plenty more issues which will keep alive on the blogosphere in future.

Take care,and stay safe!

Terrorists Boycott Delhi Commonwealth Games citing safety reasons

Post Updated on 30th September 2010 -

I had written this post when the CWG was in a serious mess. The media, both Indian & International, came down hammering on the authorities for the mess they got the CWG into... Now with just about 4 days left to the start of the CWG, I am really positive about the developments in Delhi. The athletes are happy with the village, with statements coming from various chef de missions that the Village is much better than even Melbourne. The International Zone, as per few athletes is better than even Beijing Olympics.

With all these developments, I think it is wrong on our part, and the media, to really not give a chance to the authorities. Things have been done, and yes, things had not been done as well. But surely now is not the time for bashing up India or the authorities, now is the time to 'come out and play'.

Therefore, the following post, should be read keeping in mind, that I am a proud Indian, and shall always be one. The post should be read with the spirit of awakening towards our political class.

Sid.

---

In what is being touted as the biggest embarrassment to the Indian Government and the CWG organizing committee, Terrorist groups from all around the world have decided to boycott the Commonwealth Games scheduled to happen between 3rd-14th October 2010 in the world's largest democracy's national capital, New Delhi.

This shocking news broke out late night yesterday after top sources from the LeT & Al-Qaida informed news channels their sudden and sad decision. As per the official spokesperson of the LeT, "It will be a shame that we would not be able to play with our fireworks in New Delhi during the Commonwealth Games, citing safety fears for their recruits, with collapsing ceilings and bridges all over, and with roads full of potholes."

It goes without saying, that the execution capabilities of these terrorists organizations have taken a severe beating with the hopeless infrastructure in place ahead of the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi. The LeT spokesperson added "It has become impossible for our recruits to even roam around in New Delhi easily thanks to the huge traffic jams & pathetic roads, leave aside the mammoth task of transporting the arms and ammunition needed to execute a perfect terror attack".

Viewers all around the world, and specially the Delhi spectators were excited and all prepared to witness the fireworks of LeT and Al-Qaida, especially during the opening ceremony of the Games (unconfirmed sources in LeT confirmed this news). The local population was in a state of shock after the news broke out.

Mr. Aam Aadmi, who was looking forward to the Commonwealth Games in Delhi said "It is a shame that after sporting contingents from different countries have doubted their participation in the games citing filthy accomodation and infrastructure problems, now we even have world famous terror groups boycotting the games. It is a shame and a tight slap on the face of the OC, the government of India, and the entire political class. They are good for nothing!"

Mr. Suresh Kalmadi, the Chairman of the Organizing Committee for the CWG's in New Delhi in response to this major development said "We shall have a world class Commonwealth Games, better than the Beijing Olympics. The terror groups do not know what they are going to miss." In addition, Mr. Kalmadi also burped his future plan of participating in the next bidding for hosting the Olympic Games. Mr. Lalit Bahnot, spokesperson of CWG Delhi said "we hope to welcome the terror groups in future when we host the Olympic Games, and we promise to provide them the best hygiene conditions which will keep them healthy without compromise".

The Great Indian MP

This article was originally written by me for NTMN - India's leading news satire/humor website.
---

Sheila Dixit, in shock after just 300% salary hike

The Great Indian Member of Parliament (MP)

The following are few of the reasons why the increase of salary's of our beloved MP's is justified:

1. They provide free entertainment to the citizens of India & the world through the state-owned TV channel - Doordarshan (DD). They are directly responsible for increasing the TRP ratings of the otherwise boring 'doordarshan channel'. Since, other news channels relay pictures from DD, it adds to the revenue of DD.

2. The next best alternative - Our MP's are the next best alternative for the citizens of India to watch at prime time on their TV screens. The Indian Public have got bored of the usual 'Saas, Bahu & Saazish', and therefore, the entertainment which the MP's provide while sitting in the Parliament has been a welcome change to the audience. Such great service by the MP's to the public, obviously make them deserving for a salary hike.

3. Increase in sales of few products - Our MP's have been directly responsible for increasing the sales of few particular products such as "Microphones, Pens, & even Shoes". With every heated debate in Parliament, a large quantity of Mic's, Pens & Shoes are thrown, therefore giving opportunities of growth for these industries as more and more money shall be spent from Government funds on buying new Mic's & Stationery. Obviously, our MP's shall not do such favors until and unless they get something back in return, so the salary hike once again is justified.

4. Brand Ambassadors - They are on the TV screens of each individual providing wholesome entertainment and drama. In the truest form, they are brand ambassador's of Incredible India!

5. Financing of other businesses - Our MP's are king's of multi-tasking. They do so many things other than making important policies for the country. They need the salary hikes so that they can fund their other businesses, specially in these trying times of recession.

It is a shame that our government denied a 500% increase in the salary of our MP's, and agreed upon only 300%. The Indian Public should realize that the MP's are important people, and they deserve a 100 times more salary than what the average Indian earns.

With 315 out of 543 MP's being millionaires, they are a true representation of the 'India Growth' story. This needs to be given more mileage, and salary hikes should be more often. Also, with 150 MP's facing serious criminal cases, the salaries could be of great help to them for fighting these cases, and for hiring top notch lawyers. Such social service to the GREAT INDIAN MP should continue.

Movie Review - Peepli Live

Movie Review - Peepli Live (Hindi, 2010)
Director - Anusha Rizvi
Cast - Omkar Das Manikpuri, Raghuvir Yadav
Producer - Aamir Khan Productions
Rating - ****

Des mera rang rez yeh babu...
Ghaat ghaat yahan ghat ta jadoo...
Gai bahad hai kankar shankar...
Baat hai chhoti bada patangad....
India sir yeh cheez durandar....
Rang rangeela parja tantar....

You must have heard the above song enough number of times on your television screens/radio sets, but never would you have gone deep inside the meaning of the lyrics. Read through the lyrics again, and may be even listen the song with the motive of understanding the lyrics and the message within.

Peepli Live is not about 'Farmer Suicides'. It is not about the plight of the Indian Farmer lost in the invisible world of rural India.......Well, Peepli Live is not just about the Indian Farmer and his plight, but is about each and every subject, each and every problem of the common man in India which stands important but finds no relevance by the power brokers and the mights within the political class. Add to that, the so called voice of the country, our Media have actually become news makers/ news producers, rather than being just news breakers. Think twice, and you would realize, half of the news on the ticker "Breaking News" is news actually made up by our very own TV journalists. This holds truth to most of our news channels, especially Hindi news channels, where 'Saas Bahu and Saazish' gets more airtime than a 'Independence day speech by our PM'.

Peepli Live, is about the song above. Each and every word is described to perfection in the movie, which makes you laugh enough number of times, but also makes you think - should you really laugh? A dark comedy set in rural India, showcasing the wide gap between Urban and Rural India - proof of a country within a country, Peepli Live has got characters which are more closer to reality than you ever thought. Either, it be the farmer, or the journalist, the politician, or even the power broker - each and every character portrays a role which is real - something you will totally relate to.

A perfect blend of media, politics, and the common man, the movie is not just insightful with a strong message, but is also fun all through. Talking in terms of performances, every actor has given a strong performance, right from the hugely under-rated Raghuvir Yadav, to the main lead - Natha -- Omkar Das Manikpuri. The black comedy comes alive with the superb acting and comic timing of the journalists especially by the actor playing the role of 'Deepak'.

Go watch it.

Movie Review - I Hate Luv Storys

Movie - I Hate Luv Storys (Hindi, 2010)
Cast - Imran Khan, Sonam Kapoor, Sameer Soni, Sameer Dattani, Kavin Dave
Director - Punit Malhotra (Debut)
Rating - * * * / 5

Every now and then, the Hindi Film Industry comes out with romantic movies full of dancing around the trees, full of the clichéd drama, but never has it come out with a movie making fun of all this, and still be equally romantic, and rather much more entertaining.

The movie is insanely predictable, with a story just the usual, guy meeting girl, one of them falling in love first, the other not realizing it.... and so on... But, what is not usual, is the way the director has put it across on screen. The 1st half is fast and pacy, having a lot of light moments. The 2nd half is the most predictable and is also a bit dragged towards the end, but the movie still grips you making you wait for the moment when the couple actually come together.

Both Imran Khan & Sonam Kapoor, share an amazing chemistry on screen - I wont be surprised to see both of them together in many more films. Imran plays the role of an urbane ultra cool assistant director to Vir Kapoor (Sameer Soni), and does full justice to it. He entirely looks his character, and plays it to perfection. His forte lies in romance, and should continue to take up roles in the sphere of his strengths (and not do movies like Kidnap). Sonam, nothing unusual about her character too, but gives a near perfect performance, and looks insanely beautiful. She plays her role with panache and stands tall in each scene complimenting Imran's performance.

The support cast - Sameer Soni does a Karan Johar/Sanjay Bhansali on screen, and does it well! Sameer Dattani is in the movie only to support and does pretty ok with it. The best out of the supporting cast is Kavin Dave, playing Imran's best friend in the movie. Kavin, quite a sensation on the small screen with the success of Rishta.com on Sony, gives an unforgettable support performance.

Other than the performances, the music is the strength of the movie. High on romance, the music does wonders to the storyline. Watch out for 'Bin tere' and 'Bahara' (though the Rahat Fateh Ali Khan version of Bahara is not part of the movie - Get the audio CD!). Vishal-Shekhar prove their mettle once again.

Punit Malhotra, the director making his debut, has treated the story in a refreshing way making one smile all through the movie. Watch it for him, for the cast, for their chemistry and for love.. I bet you won't hate this love story.

India @ FIFA World Cup 2010

Source - Paul Beckett

The Wall Street Journal

The England squad at the FIFA World Cup 2010 numbers 23 players. The BBC’s crew numbers at least 122, according to this report. India, though you probably didn’t know this, has sent a team of 130.

None of them will appear on the field, however, since India did not qualify. Nor will they commentate on the games. But neither the games, nor the commentary, nor much else in South Africa would be happening without them. They are all employees of Mahindra Satyam, the information technology company that used to be known as Satyam Computer Services Ltd.

Just as every international team in the competition has its unseen ranks of arrangers, trainers, physios, and organizers to get 11 players onto the field for each game, so the Mahindra Satyam workers are the unseen crew that make the World Cup run on time.

Mahindra Satyam
The technical team of Mahindra Satyam manages the FIFA World Cup 2010 at a command center in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The company is the official IT service provider for FIFA, the international soccer federation that runs the World Cup. Mahindra Satyam won the contract in 2007 and maintained its relationship with FIFA through the meltdown of Satyam Computer Services and the resurrection of the company in the past year and a half.

(In case you missed it, Satyam’s founder B. Ramalinga Raju fiddled the books to the tune of more than $1 billion, prompting a government-organized rescue in early 2009 and subsequent sale to Tech Mahindra.) The current FIFA contract runs until after the next World Cup in Brazil in 2014, according to Dilbagh Gill, who manages the FIFA relationship for the company.

That’s why you might have noticed the Mahindra Satyam billboards at the side of match games: as part of its contract, Mahindra Satyam gets nine minutes of advertising for all 64 of the 90-minute games of the tournament, Mr. Gill told India Real Time from Johannesburg.

Part of Mahindra Satyam’s work involves accrediting some 250,000 people (not including fans) making sure that the right people have the right badges for the access that they need. It helps organize 130,000 volunteers from 40 countries. It runs a transport management system that coordinates 10,000 trips a day from a fleet of 1,000 cars, buses, trucks and vans, Mr. Gill said.

And the company makes sure that the $1 billion of “assets” at the event – flat screen TVs, mobile phones, laptops etc. – are deployed properly and returned to their proper place after the final on July 11. So far, four laptops have been misplaced out of 4,300 distributed, Mr. Gill said. FIFA’s own intranet and extranet systems also are supported by Mahindra Satyam, so it handles requests for tickets from the world’s media (there are requests pending for 38,000) and the network on which referees write their match reports after the game.

Mahindra Satyam’s 130 employees in South Africa are predominantly Indian but comprise six nationalities. There are another 50 employees around India working on the event, Mr. Gill said.

Since India’s national soccer team is not there, which team is he supporting? “I hope the U.S. does a good job this time,” Mr. Gill said. “I just became a U.S. citizen.”

Movie Review - KITES - Perfect Take Off - Crash Landed

Movie Review - Kites - (Hindi Version) (2010 - India)
Cast: Hrithik Roshan, Barbara Mori, Kangana Ranaut, Kabir Bedi
Director: Anurag Basu
Duration: 2 Hours
Producer: Rakesh Roshan
Rating: * *

--

Kites would be a splendid case study on 'a perfect take off for an eventual crash landing'. After watching the movie, it would not be wrong to say, that the fate of the movie has been sealed with the movie being nowhere close to what was expected out of it.

Anurag Basu tries each bit to make the movie look good and feel good for the audience, which he does, but the magic does not really work as compared to his previous movies. He had one of the best looking and best performing actors with him, but could not really pull it off with the same panache which he did say for Life In a Metro. Their is simply no grip in the final product of the movie, which the story surely promised to have. Only the music/songs grab you for a while, but even they seem to become ordinary as you sit and watch the non-gripping story.

In terms of performances, Hrithik Roshan was at his normal best. It is only the story which falters, and really does not leave much scope for the actors who have all given their best. Barbara Mori has done exceptionally well, and suits the role perfectly. Kangana Ranaut does not have much to do, but does well in whatever she had. The rest of the cast are also good, but none could really spell magic due to the weak script.

I will keep the review really short, as there is not much to really say other than the above. Kites, is a typical bollywood movie, but mainly spoken in English. It is just another movie where it could have been 'the movie of the year'. I will also tag it as one of the most abrupt movies I have ever watched.... Watch the movie for Hrithik if you are a die-hard fan, otherwise you deserve to give it a miss. Once you watch it, you would know why I call it 'Abrupt'.
